Ngāti Mutunga was honoured to take part in the 90th commemoration of the memorial of Tā Māui Pōmare at Ōwae Marae, joining whānau, iwi leaders, and Te Arikinui Kuini Ngā wai hono i te pō in recognising the enduring legacy of one of Aotearoa’s most influential Māori leaders.
As descendants of Tā Māui Pōmare, Ngāti Mutunga uri were privileged to contribute to the kaupapa in a number of meaningful ways. Whānau participated in wānanga that reflected on Tā Māui’s vision and legacy, performed poi manu as part of the day’s commemorations, and supported the manaakitanga of the occasion through serving Te Arikinui and all those gathered. These contributions reflected the values of service, whanaungatanga, and the responsibility of carrying forward the legacy of our tūpuna.
The presence of Te Arikinui highlighted the longstanding relationship between the Kīngitanga and the people of Taranaki, reaffirming connections that span generations. The commemoration was a powerful reminder of the importance of remembering our history, strengthening our relationships, and continuing the aspirations of Tā Māui Pōmare for future generations.
It was a deeply significant occasion for Ngāti Mutunga to stand proudly alongside whānau and iwi, honouring our shared whakapapa while reaffirming our commitment to the values and vision that Tā Māui championed throughout his life.
