On April 17, 2025, whānau gathered at the Urenui Hotel to celebrate the successful completion of the second season of the Tātai Tangata ki te Whenua o Ngāti Mutunga programme. This six-month kaupapa has empowered participants to reconnect with their whenua, reviving traditional Māori land practices and sustainable agriculture.
Programme Highlights
- Maramataka-Based Gardening: Tauira engaged in hands-on learning, guided by the māori lunar calendar, covering topics such as soil health, planting techniques, pest management, and water conservation.
- Seed Saving Practices: Participants learned the art of seed saving, harvesting and storing seeds from vegetables, herbs, and flowers for future use.
- Community Contributions: The cohort provided the AGM table with potatoes and kamokamo grown during the programme, along with bags for whānau to take home.
- E Kai Māori Wānanga: A select group of tauira attended the E Kai Māori Wānanga at Owae Marae, led by chef Joe McLeod. This three-day wānanga celebrated and revitalised the mātauranga of Kai Māori, reconnecting participants with traditional foods and cooking methods.
Mentorship and Support
Throughout the programme, whānau were supported by knowledgeable mentors and experts who provided guidance and practical advice. This nurturing environment allowed participants to flourish and grow, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to manage and cultivate the land in a sustainable and culturally respectful manner.
Looking Ahead
The success of Programme 2 marks a significant step in the preservation and revitalisation of traditional Māori practices. Plans are underway for future programmes, continuing to empower whānau to connect with their land, culture, and heritage.
