A unique and enriching collaboration took place between Ngāti Mutunga, Otago University, and Manukorihi Intermediate, creating an inspiring space at Ngāti Tama for our taiohi to come together and explore the fundamentals of science within our taiao. This wānanga provided opportunities for our taiohi to share knowledge, acquire new skills, and build meaningful relationships while working alongside the local community, university scientists, and university students, all of whom served as inspirational role models. Throughout the event, respect for the mātauranga that the students brought was central to the learning experience.
The theme of the wānanga, Tuia I Hawaiki, Tuia I Te Uru, beautifully reflected the intention to weave together the strengths of both Western science (Te Uru) and Mātauranga Māori (I Hawaiki), creating something new and more robust that draws on the best of both worlds.
During the wānanga, the taiohi ventured into the awa (river) next to Pukearuhe, immersing themselves in the world of freshwater ecology. They engaged in hands-on activities such as testing chemicals in aquariums and creating DIY photometers to measure dissolved nitrates in the water. Additionally, the group explored the various pH levels of the water and investigated the scientific uses of wool.
Our taiohi were actively engaged in all aspects of the wānanga, from participating in all the scientific activities to assisting with kitchen duties, cleaning up after meals, and taking care of the marae. The wānanga proved to be an invaluable experience, fostering a deeper understanding of science within the context of Māori knowledge and community.
As hosts, Ngāti Mutunga provided the venue, kai and taiohi. It was an easy collaboration to work with Te Mata Taiohi (bilingual unit) from Manukorihi. The learning continues for the taiohi with a science focus next term, they will take what they did and learnt and include it into the their science fair investigations and activities.
