Onaero Beach Planting – Mangatītī Stream

The Mangatītī stream flows around Puketapu and Pukemiro pā before flowing out into the Onaero awa near the river mouth.  For many years this stream was directed through a 50m culvert under the domian to allow for vehicle access and camping sites as well as to help drain the wetland area that was once a dominant feature of much our our landscape here in Ngāti Mutunga.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Mutunga and NPDC have recently worked together to re-daylight this beautiful stream as it flows out from Pukemiro, across a small section of the domain and into the Onaero awa.  Thanks to the ‘build a bridge’ project at WITT, a small vehicle bridge was also installed to enable small vehicles to access the river.

To complete this exciting project, we were joined by our three rohe kura; Urenui, Mimitangiatua and Uruti, as well as NPDC, Downers, local community and Ngāti Mutunga whānau to plant out the newly-daylighted stream.  It was a beautiful day by the awa and all 750 plants were in the ground by lunchtime!  We finished it all off with a sausage sizzle and a game of footy with the children.
