Introduction
Pest Control is a kaupapa-driven environmental initiative focused on protecting and restoring local ngahere, awa, and coastal ecosystems within the Ngāti Mutunga rohe. Grounded in kaitiakitanga, the project brings together whānau, hapū, and community partners to reduce the impact of invasive predators such as rats, possums, and mustelids. Through strategic trapping lines, monitoring programmes, and mātauranga Māori-informed practices, the initiative aims to create safer habitats for native manu and taonga species while strengthening intergenerational responsibility for the whenua.
Beyond pest eradication, the project is also about capacity building and reconnection. Rangatahi are involved in learning practical conservation skills, data collection, and environmental leadership, linking STEM knowledge with tikanga and local histories. By combining modern conservation science with cultural values, Ngāti Mutunga is working toward a long-term vision of ecological resilience, biodiversity regeneration, and a thriving environment that future generations can inherit with pride.
