Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Mutunga stands in solidarity with our whānau from Ngāti Ruanui, Ngā Rauru, and Ngāruahine, who will be most directly affected by the proposed seabed mining activities within their coastal rohe.
Together with all Iwi of Taranaki, Ngāti Mutunga firmly opposes the Trans-Tasman Resources (TTR) proposal to mine iron sand from the South Taranaki Bight. The plan to extract 50 million tonnes annually from the seabed poses an unacceptable risk to our marine environment, seabed ecosystems, and the life they sustain.
“Our iwi understands the challenges of upholding our environmental values in the face of pressure from commercial interests,” says Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Mutunga Chair Jamie Tuuta. “We encourage our communities to become informed about the consequences of such activities and to speak out to protect the future of our moana and our whānau.”
