Reef Monitoring – Mauri Compass

We had an amazing evening out on the reef in November carrying out our first Rūnanga-led reef survey at Kukuriki.  A baseline study of this reef was carried out by SLR on behalf of OMV as part of their oil spill contingency planning and relationship with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Mutunga.  We have recently kicked off our own marine monitoring programme with our Mauri Compass tool and have engaged Ian & Riaki Ruru to help us get this fine-tuned to complete a marine mauri compass report for our inter-tidal coastline.  We would like to also thank Jesu from Taranaki Regional Council for her guidance and for taking the time to come and teach our whānau the scientific methods of reef monitoring.  This mahi will be carried out annually in November so make sure you look out for the pānui at the beginning of next season!

Our Mauri compass mahi depends on whānau engagement so it was great to see our whānau out at the beach and participating in our reef surveys.  It was a beautiful evening of whakawhanaungatanga, story sharing and learning from each other.  Mauri Ora e te Whānau!
