We continue to monitor Oi along a small section of our coastline in the north and are pleased to find that these numbers seem to be steadily increasing. We are into our third season of burrow checks and second season of Tītī banding (banding greyfaced petrel chicks). This mahi is largely supported by the local landowners who are tirelessly trapping these areas and are fully invested in the health and wellbeing of their Oi populations. This season we monitored 38 successful burrows all the way to pre-fledging Tītī and managed to reach 7 chicks for banding. Some of the burrows are so long we can’t even see the ends with our burrow scopes so we are certain there are more than we can see and we also suspected that some of the Tītī may have fledged before we got to our final visit of the season. Oi burrow checks are carried out three times in a season to measure the breeding success of our Oi through from eggs to fledglings.
