Climate Change

Introduction

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Mutunga are actively engaged in climate resilience, environmental monitoring, mātauranga‑based planning, and collaborative research to understand and respond to the impacts of climate change in their rohe. Their work spans community wānanga, environmental tohu tracking, biodiversity management, and developing tools for climate adaptation planning.

We regularly undertake environmental monitoring initiatives that feed into climate adaptation planning, such as:

  • Mauri Compass assessments of waterways, including the Urenui and Mimitangiatua rivers, which help track ecological health and inform freshwater management.
  • Ongoing monitoring of reef ecosystems and indigenous species (e.g., kororā nesting success), which contributes to understanding climate‑related changes in marine and coastal environments.

These environmental baselines are essential for climate resilience and long‑term planning.
