Inanga Habitat Survey

Our taiao team have partnered with Wild for Taranaki on a very important kaupapa for our awa. Inanga are taonga for Ngāti Mutunga and this kaupapa provides an opportunity for our taiao team to gain a better understanding spawning patterns. Therefore, it was agreed with Wild for Taranaki that a good use of this time would be a salt-wedge survey of our awa to identify how far up the salt wedge reaches on a large high tide and from there work out where the sweet spots are for inanga spawning from an ecology point of view. The survey will involve kayaking the main rivers in our rohe to possible inanga spawning sites just beyond the salt wedge.  The taiao team have just completed the survey on the Onaero river and will continue with Mimitangiatua and Urenui rivers in the coming weeks.
