Wahi Tapu
CULTURAL MONITORING
Ngāti Mutunga has expanded its cultural monitoring staff numbers to be able to support the growing number of building and utility projects occurring across the rohe where earthworks affect Wāhi Tapu and Tūpuna Awa. Individually, and as teams the cultural monitors have worked alongside NPDC on the phase 2 installation of new water pipes; Chorus at Onaero, installing the fibre network; Downer on resurfacing SH3 at Onaero; Powerco for the lines upgrade at Urenui Campgrounds, residents as they build, relocate or extend properties and Greymouth Petroleum during the installation of a new gas pipeline along Inland North Road. Some of this work occurred across the Waiau stream and in the Treaty Settlement areas of both Ngāti Rahiri and Ngāti Mutunga, requiring cultural monitoring representation to work jointly.
